Concrete Castles | 48″ x 48″ x 2.5″ | ink, oil & acrylic on canvas | by Brooke Harker

original painting by Brooke Harker. This painting drew inspiration from years as a special events entertainer for children in Los Angeles. Concrete Castles came from a sketch made while I went to Hollywood to repair a Rapunzel wig.  I had designed hair for many theatre productions in the past, so I foolishly thought I had the skills to restyle a carefully crafted floor length blonde wig created by Hollywood professionals. In doing so, I was up all night with little success. I perhaps had 30 minutes of sleep and shed a lot of tears in frustration since I’d rented the wig from a friend who was...

Hollywood Undressed | 48″ x 48″ x 2.5″ | ink, oil & acrylic on canvas | by Brooke Harker

original painting by Brooke Harker, 2011 Artist’s Description: Before I lived in Los Angeles, I worked as a civilian for US ARMY Europe in Germany. My goal was to have a “normal” job working with children and have weekends to travel, write and paint.  In going to Europe, I wanted to get away from diving deep into emotional territory as I had been doing in theatre studies…or so I thought.   However, taking a job with the military 2 weeks prior to 9/11 didn’t really create an environment free of emotional territory.  I worked with 50-120 kids per day, children who were used to moving, all over...

Heart of the View | 36″ x 93″ | ink, oil & acrylic on canvas | by Brooke Harker

Artist’s Description: Sometimes the views we know are only possible because of the people we knew. As I painted this, I realized how much my life changed from the moment this scene first captured my attention to the moment the paint landed on the canvas. There is nostalgia in this work for joyful times and the loss of a love I never imagined losing. The houses in this painting looked out over the ocean, although most people wouldn’t know that unless they were familiar with the...
