Each time one went by it might have seemed like I had won the lottery. It became a bit of game for me to watch for the perfect compositions to pass by. The architecture of the Beverly Wilshire with the awnings and flags had drawn me to this location for the hunt.  Later the photo that inspired this painting reminded me of a black and white film where only one...

Street Lamps of LA 2 | 84 x 66 x 3.75 | ink & acrylic on canvas | by Brooke Harker | SOLD

original painting by Brooke Harker. Artist’s Description: The inspiration for this painting came from a live sketch downtown LA. It was my second sketch of the day. During the first sketch, I met a man in a bike helmet who looked like a security guard.  He was actually a retired security guard who spent his days biking around downtown looking for people to help. He appointed himself to speak with anyone who approached me and proved to be quite helpful with the drunk homeless men who got too close while I sketched. I had my own surprise body guard. He accompanied me to the next corner where I...

original painting by Brooke Harker. Artist’s Description: As I sketched the inspiration for this painting on paper downtown Los Angeles, I thought about how I wanted to make a film about my process of making art. I just didn’t know how. Within 20 minutes a man I’d never seen before walked up to me carrying a camera on his shoulder and asked if he could make a video of me sketching for his Vimeo channel.  Kevin Lynn of KLL Video Productions had a 2 minute video edited and on-line by the end of the evening. That event of synchronicity led to us collaborating on a 3 minute video that documented...

Artist’s Description: In selecting reference images from photos taken on an adventure to Hong Kong, the silhouettes of teenagers depicted in this painting amongst the night lights drew my attention. I would not have seen from this angle had I not crouched to drink water in the humid summer weather in front of one of Hong Kong’s many 7-11s…I have never seen so many 7-11s in my life or in such a concentrated area.  The 7-11s carried a lot of Hello Kitty gift items which I...

Artist’s Description: Amongst the bustling pedestrians on my first trip to Hong Kong, I found a universal message in a sea of colorful signs to which I was foreign.  The couple on the corner held hands which immediately connected me to their story. The man carried a red shopping bag which evoked a sense of nostalgia in me for recent times spent in southern China, since it was most common for plastic shopping bags to be red verses the white ones we have in the US.
