Behind “Driving Fire”

Somewhere I heard the quote: “Go as far as you can see and you will see further.” These words became my guiding light while working on this painting. I started Driving Fire as the largest piece for my first solo exhibition in Italy.  The deep green viridian color called to me yet gave no other instructions. I chose a color that represents heart energy. The selection of Hollywood seemed a fit because it is a place where millions go to follow their dreams. It is a place of infinite possibilities and a place where many get disillusioned in the pursuit of doing what they love. I took the photo...

Reflections of Cumbres Pass | 30″ x 40″ | ink, oil & acrylic on canvas | by Brooke Harker

original painting by Brooke Harker. As a child I remember dangling from my father’s arm in the hobby shops as he had lengthy conversations about trains. I would tug at this hand with the thought that he would move and we could carry on with our day. His fascination with trains and passion for photographing them wove through my memories as a child. I remember him pulling the truck to the side of the road on countless occasions so he could take photo after photo of trains. I attended shows with him where he sold his train photos and other models he had collected over the years.  I...

Tijuana Tandum 1 | 48″ x 48″x 2.5″ | ink, oil & acrylic on canvas | by Brooke Harker | SOLD

original painting by Brooke Harker, 2011. I fell in love with a photograph of Tijuana so I bought it, put it on my shelf and looked at it for about 6 years.  It made me happy.  I wanted to contact the photographer to tell him how much I loved the photo, but then I couldn’t read his signature.  I suppose I could try to track him through the gallery, but I never did. His work became a springboard for me to create an abstracted interpretation of Tijuana, broken into the two parts “Tijuana Tandum 1 & 2.” It was my hope that with all the love and energy I felt as I created...

Tijuana Tandum 2 | 48″ x 48″ x 2.5″ | ink, oil & acrylic on canvas | by Brooke Harker

original painting available at Lu Martin Galleries, in Laguna Beach, CA. by Brooke Harker. I fell in love with a photograph of Tijuana so I bought it, put it on my shelf and looked at it for about 6 years.  It made me happy.  I wanted to contact the photographer to tell him how much I loved the photo, but then I couldn’t read his signature of the artist. The contact information for the gallery stopped working so I couldn’t track him down, yet I am thankful for the vision of that photographer.  His work became a springboard for me to create this abstracted interpretation of Tijuana, broken...
