"Amalfi-Italy"  2000, ink/watercolor pencil on paper, 6" x  9", collection of Dee & Paul Popelka

painted from a wall by a castle while my friends basked in the sun on the beach behind me. Two cars full of outgoing Italians stopped and talked to me. They invited me to the beach with them. I spent the afternoon making friends, swimming and sketching portraits.

"Manarola-Italy"  2000,  ink/watercolor pencil on paper,  6" x  9" , collection of Batista Simpson

live sketch after a hike in Cinque Terre, Italy.

"Misson Beach, San Diego"  2004, ink/watercolor on paper, 9.5" x  12", collecton of Susan Bender

I stood on the beach as I painted this...I felt very much like myself that day.

"Avalon Casino"  2005, ink/watercolor pencil on paper, 8.5" x  11"

I used the ocean to dip my brush as I created this. From the shore, Roderick Smith, a wonderful artist whose plein air paintings I'd seen earlier in the day approached. He recognized a spirit in me and the way I paint that I often forget to recognize in myself. I feel gratitude for such a gift and for the inspiration his way of being brought me in the years that we have kept in contact since.

"Rainbow Behind Gdansk"  2008, ink/watercolor on paper, 9" x  12"

In barefeet, I ran in the rain along a cobblestone street to meet an old love by the fountain of Neptune. Ten years since we had first fed pidgeons by Neptune. Much had passed in the years since we'd last walked along the sea. We told our stories and when he left to meet his fiance, I found a place to enjoy the rainbow and paint.

"Boats by Josephine"  2002, ink/watercolor pencil on paper, 11"x  9"

I had gone on a trip by myself to the city of Hamburg. I met a little girl named Josephine while I painted; she sat and drew with me while her parents ate ice cream at the neighboring table. When the wind picked up her drawing and dropped it into the water, she didn't cry, she just laughed.

"Meanders of Regensberg"  2002, ink/watercolor on paper, 9" x  11"

I spent the day by the river with friends. I felt really annoyed that the pen turned out to be waterproof...I like them to blur. images from that day on photos page.

"Secret Harbor-Lake Tahoe"  2004, ink/watercolor on paper, 9.25" x  12"

I would have to say that Lake Tahoe ranks as one of the most beautiful places I have seen in the world. I painted this from a rock overlooking the shore. While I painted, a little chipmunk kept trying to get in my bag.
